Excursion in the forest of Is Cannoneris

At a few km from the centre of Domus de Maria is the beautiful Forest of Is Cannoneris, one of the largest holm oak groves in Europe. The Forest has an area of approximately 4700 hectares of holm oaks, chestnut trees, strawberry trees and undergrowth, all pervaded by the scent of the intense Mediterranean scrub.
The area is within the municipalities of Domus de Maria, Pula, and Villa San Pietro, including the territory of Piscina Manna as well.
The evocative, exciting forest is easily accessible via numerous paths and roads. Walk immersed in the greenery, as efficient signs indicate the main streets along which to follow your itineraries.
In the forest you may spot numerous animals such as wild boars, foxes, weasels, wild cats, dormice, fallow deer, and many Sardinian deer; you will also come across various waterways. The main waterways are Mitza su Filisargiu, Rio Isca de Crapitta, Canale de su Marigosu, Riu sa Truba e Sa Para, Riu su Pizianti, and Canale Medau Angiu.
Those who love bird-watching may admire the majestic specimens of golden eagles, peregrine falcons, and common ravens as well as numerous other species of birds that live undisturbed in the area.
There is a picnic area from which you can directly reach the Calamixi Gorges, where granite walls and spiers rise around the canyon floor.

The Is Cannoneris Forest is a rich and exciting landscape where you can spend a fantastic day outdoors immersed in utterly uncontaminated nature.
